Simas Earns Top Honors at Marysville

Marysville, CA (June 18, 2016)…Current Santa Rosa resident Taylor Simas was the class of the field during the B.C.R.A midget 30-lap main event Saturday night at Marysville. Simas held off a charging Cory Elliott by just 0.444 seconds at the finish line. “It’s been a while since I have won a midget race and it feels really good to celebrate with my crew and my family in victory lane,” said Simas. He also thanked his fiancée Kate. The two plan to be married in a few months. Maria Cofer should be commended for driving an outstanding 30- lap main event. She did a great job and finished third.

Elliott started the night by securing the all-time qualifying track record at Marysville Raceway for the B.C.R.A. midgets. His lap time was 14.312. Britton Bock scored the win in heat race number one while Bobby Wilson was the first to the checkered flag in heat two.

Teenager Kyle Offill enjoyed a solid night of racing and captured the win during the B.C.R.A. Midget Lites main event. During the race, Scott Males took a wild ride and tore down some of the turn two fencing, but walked away under his own power. Offill showed speed and patience in battling with slower cars. Chris Hansen finished in second. Hansen was almost one second behind Offill at the line. Craig Dillard and R.C. Smith finished in third and fourth respectively. Both Dillard and Smith each won their heat races.

Matt Micheli and Cortney Dozier put on the show of a lifetime. The limited late model main event had more twists and turns than a detective novel. The two veterans of the sport went at it on the track but it was also refreshing to see that the two could race that close for so long without any altercation on the track. As the final lap approached Dozier was the leader. However, going into turn three, Dozier’s car skidded up the track allowing Micheli one final charge. As the two raced side-by-side to the checkered flag, nobody could predict who was going to win. IN an epic photo finish, Micheli won by just 0.043 seconds resulting in one of the closest finishes ever recorded at Marysville Raceway. During his victory lane interview, Micheli admitted to seeing Dozier’s left rear tire flat but still wasn’t sure if he had enough to pass him. Ray Trimble, after an earlier spin, came back to finish third. Trimble also won the lone heat race for this division.

Terry Schank Jr. returned to his winning ways and dominated the wingless sprint car main event. Schank showed why he is still the best of the best in the spec sprints as he battled his way through the field to get the win. Give credit to young Jake Morgan who showed speed and finished in the second spot. Josh Vieira continued to show his relevance as a top competitor and finished third. Early leader Tony Richards fell back to a fourth place finish. Crowd favorite Misty Castleberry finished fifth. Johnny Burns won the first heat race. Richards won the second heat.

Michael Helton earned the pure stock win by being the only car capable of making the main event. Two other drivers showed up to race but both Anthony Doubledee and Ted Ahart had heat race mechanical issues that sidelined them from the main event.
