Defending Pro Winner Teves Wins Night One
Marysville, CA (September 23, 2016) – Marysville Raceway hosted 71 cars during the 21st Annual Western States Dwarf Car Nationals on Friday night. A familiar face won the 20 lap Pro Division Dwarf Car main event as David Teves, who won last year’s Saturday night main event, earned the hard fought victory. Many of the other favorites suffered through problems. Shawn Jones front left tire came off on its own early in the event. Both John Isabella and Mike Grenert each had issues. Teves held off Danny Wagner and Terry Rothweiler at the finish line. Gene Pires and Joe Frock rounded out the top five.
The Veteran Division main event was a marathon. After 40 minutes of time and just 16 laps completed, the officials did the smart thing and shortened the race. The 23 car starting field started with a series of yellow flags. Three yellows plagued the event during the first three laps. The longest stretch of green flag racing took place from lap seven to eleven. During that time Kevin Bender passed Buddy Olschowka for the lead.
Olschowka had led up to that point but drifted wide on lap 10 coming out of turn four. Bender seized the opportunity and grabbed the lead. Bender survived numerous restarts and was declared the winner on lap 16. Olschowka held on for second. Erik Weisler did a great job to finish third. Brian Quilty started deep in the field to secure a fourth place finish.
Fifteen cars started the 20 lap Sportsman main event. After the dust had settled it was Cody Peters getting the victory. On lap 14, Peters passed then leader Brett Olney and never looked back. Olney was never able to catch back up and challenge Peters for the win. Ken Radabaugh finished third. Young Ben Wiesz came across the line in fourth. Zack Albers was fifth. The top eight finishers are locked into the Saturday night finale.
