Rowdy McClenon Gets Elusive First Win at Marysville
Marysville, CA (June 20, 2015) – Marysville Raceway has provided many memorable first time wins this year. That trend continued Saturday night as Anderson’s Rowdy McClenon won his first career 410 winged sprint car main event. It was redemption for McClenon because just three weeks prior, McClenon was leading the main event and looked to have it wrapped up until his left rear wheel came off causing him to crash. Tonight, McClenon made all 25 laps and won the emotional main event not only for himself but also the crowd seemed to really be involved in the overall significance of the moment. Colby Wiesz tried his best to pass McClenon late in the race but ultimately finished second. Brad Bumgarner started eighth and by lap 16 he raced his way into the third spot. Bumgarner has really looked strong this season racing at Marysville. It was good to see Carl Droivold back racing a sprint car and he finished fourth. Mark Tabor Jr. finished in the fifth spot. Billy Butler did a fantastic job to win the first heat race. Wiesz won the second eight lap heat race. McClenon was fastest in qualifying. His quick lap timed in at 12.867.
San Jose dwarf car driver Shawn Jones continued his winning ways at Marysville by capturing his third feature event win of the year. Jones started 10th and had to work hard for the win. Ryan Bender finished in the second spot. Folsom’s Kevin Bender was third. Both Bender and Jeff Fitch led laps tonight during the 20 lap feature. A total of 13 cars started the main event. Winter and Jones each won heat races.
Matt Beardslee, a Pro 4 driver, won the 12-lap economy sprint main event. Beardslee beat Jason Holt by less than a second at the checkered flag. Kevin Dozier was third. Heat race winner Dusty Barton finished fourth.
Jimmy Ford and Brian Cooper each won their eight lap heat races. Those two drivers would start in the second row of the main event. On the opening lap of the feature race Matt Magenheimer led the opening lap. By lap two Cooper was the new leader. Cooper led until lap six when Howard Law took over the top spot. The battle for the lead was great but in the end Law picked up his third win of the year. Kyle Cheney drove a great race but didn’t get the finish he deserved. Cheney started 12th and at one point was in the third spot; however, on the last lap he was scored in sixth. Jim Waller started on the front row and drifted back to fourth. On lap 19 he moved back into third. He ended up finishing in third.
Dwarf car winner Shawn Jones won the first spec sprint heat race. Defending track champion Tim Sherman Jr. won the second heat. During the first heat, Brent Steck walked away from a scary flip that destroyed his #84. Later in the night, Jones took a nasty flip on lap two of the main event. He was uninjured but done for the night. Misty Castleberry led the first 10 laps. Contact with Peter Paulson while battling for the lead sent Castleberry’s car into one of the safety tires in the infield with a broken front end. Paulson went on to lead the next two laps until Josh Vieira passed him. From there Vieira led the final few laps to get the win. Cody Fendley secured a second place finish when he passed Paulson on lap 16. Paulson hung around for third. Sherman Jr. raced up to fourth and Johnny Burns came home fifth.
