Sean Becker Goes Back to Victory Lane

Marysville, CA (July 14, 2018) …. Marysville Raceway hosted four racing divisions during Saturday night’s point race #11. The fans were not only treated to great on track racing, but their wallet also felt good because it was only $1 to get into the grandstands.
Roseville’s Sean Becker earned the fastest lap in qualifying. Becker’s fastest lap was 12.434. Of the 16 sprint cars entered tonight, 15 of them qualified. Heath Hall was unbale to complete one lap in qualifying.
Fifteen sprint cars took the green flag for the 25-lap main event. Kenny Allen and Sean Becker started on the front row. Becker was able to get the jump over Allen and led the field into turn one. Sean Becker led the first 17 laps of a fast and narrow racing surface. In fact, the race went non-stop until Billy Wallace slowed in turn four to bring out the first and only caution of the night. Racing resumed with Becker up front and Allen in second. While it wasn’t as easy as it seemed, Becker showed his veteran moves to safely negotiate the slower cars and pull away at the end of the race. Allen held on to finish second. Bobby Butler ran in the top three all night. Butler was close to Allen as the two crossed the checkered flag. Korey Lovell had another solid outing and finished fourth. Peter Paulson rounded out the top five. Mike Monahan won the first heat race. Lovell got the popular win during heat two. Becker thanked the Menne family for their continued support of him as a driver this season. It was Becker’s first sprint car win of 2018.
Rod Oliver led the first half of the Super Stock main event. James Castleberry showed his championship form and passed Oliver on the eleventh lap. Chris Warner was able to pass Oliver, after Oliver got sideways in turn three. Castleberry held a decent lead and Warner was not able to catch up. Oliver held on to the third spot. Richard Vander Ploeg came home fourth. Warner won the six-lap heat race. Castleberry thanked the large crowd for coming out in his victory lane interview and is hoping to see a future dollar night once again.
Mike Merritt led the opening four laps of the IMCA Sport Mod main event. Yet, on the fourth lap he drifted wide in turn two. This allowed Phillip Shelby to sneak to the bottom and take the lead. On the previous laps, those two drivers battled side-by-side. The crowd loved it. Yellow on lap five slowed the event because of debris. Shelby led the single file restart back to the green flag. Shelby began to pull away. On lap seven he already had a half straightaway advantage. While Shelby was dominating the real battle was for second, third and fourth.
Scott Savell made a daring move as he tried to go from fourth to second entering turn one. Savell drove up and over the infield berm and then proceeded to slide up into the second-place car. Savell was able to make the move stick and continue in the second spot. Damian Merritt also benefited from the move and raced into the third spot. Jimmy Ford fell to fourth. A few laps later Mike Merritt’s night came to an end. Tough break for the former leader of the race. The race finished with Shelby way out front. Savell finished second. Ford came home third. Damian Merritt finished in the fourth spot. Jim Waller was able to finish in the fifth spot. Phillip Shelby dominated heat race #1. Scott Savell led all six laps to win the second heat race. Shelby was all class in victory lane again and it was good to have him back at the race track.
Twelve Hobby Stocks took the green flag for their 20-lap main event. Up front and leading the first lap was Kyle Cheney. Jesse Van Roekel was strong all night and quickly moved into the second spot. The race slowed on lap nine when Cheney was hit by two slower cars that caused damage to the No. 13. Even with the altercation, Cheney continued as the leader. Cheney restarted the event and cruised to another win at Marysville Raceway. Jim Brookshire and Shannon Collins had a good battle most of the race. Late in the event Brookshire got the better of Collins and took over the third spot. Collins finished fourth. Blake Disomma had possibly the best run of the night. Originally, he started dead last and raced his way to a fifth-place finish. Cheney won an earlier heat race as did Collins. The quiet speaking Cheney thanked his immediate family who surrounded him in victory lane.
