Shawn Jones Wins Dwarf Main at Marysville
Marysville, CA (July 28, 2018) – The Dwarf Cars packed the pits of Marysville Raceway Saturday night. A huge turnout of 27 competitors rocked the high banked quarter-mile raceway. The Dwarf Cars entertained the crowd with four heat races, a semi-main event and an action packed 20-lap feature. Shawn Jones, fresh off his wingless sprint car win at Chico the night before, led the final 14 laps on Saturday night to win the Dwarf Car main event. Jones is one of the most versatile drivers in Northern California and should be given a chance at a winged sprint car if he wants. Jones took the lead away from Scott Dahlgren on the fifth circuit. The race was slowed a few times for spinning cars but ultimately it was one of the better races of the season for the Dwarf Cars. A big altercation occurred on lap 11 when Ryan Winter had a mechanical issue and spun in front of most of the field. Once the dust had settled, five of the top seven cars in running order had been in one way or another involved. Dan Geil started on the front row and drifted back to fourth but avoided the lap 11 problem and raced his way into a second-place finish. Mike Reeder started ninth and finished third. The biggest mover and shaker award went to Jeff Fitch who came out of the B main, started 18th and finished fourth. Tim Fitzpatrick rounded out the top five.
Kevin Bender won the B main event. Bender was on the move in the feature event and at one point had gone from 17th to fifth but spun on lap 12 in turn four. Ben Wiesz transferred out the B main event also. He started main event in the 19th spot and finished seventh.
Shawn Whitney won the first heat race for the Dwarf Cars. Other winners included Mike Reeder, Jack Haverty and Tim Fitzpatrick.
Colfax driver Colby Wiesz led all 25-laps to win the winged 360 sprint car main event. Even though that was impressive, Wiesz gets more accolades because he had just finished 20-laps in the Dwarf Car main. Wiesz new nickname should be “The Ironman.” Maybe fatigue played a part near the ending of the race because Cody Hodgson was a man on a mission. Hodgson closed in on Wiesz the final five laps. Hodgson was not afraid to run the top and continued to build up momentum in trying to catch Wiesz. Wiesz seemed to miss some of his marks on the track and Hodgson closed to within a car length on the white flag lap. Somehow Weisz was able to hold off Hodgson at the line. The crowd seemed to love both driver’s efforts to get to the finish line first. Billy Wallace came home in the third spot. Mike Monahan finished fourth. Brent Bjork spun earlier in the race to bring out a yellow and then charged back to a fifth-place finish.
The main event took an unexpected turn on lap six after Mike Ballantine spun in turn two. Under the yellow, Jeremy Hawes and Kenny Allen made contact. Hawes front end collapsed, and Allen was disqualified from the race by the track official. Hawes was also disqualified from earning main event points after a brief disagreement occurred in the pit area with Allen’s father. This will now give the point lead to Mike Monahan.
Ten Super Stocks took Don Dunlap’s green flag and roared into turn one. Eddie Gardner, who won heat race one, took the early lead. On lap three Gardner lost the lead and drifted back a few spots. This put Dan Brown Jr. in charge of the race. Yet, on lap five, Brown Jr. coasted to a stop in turn four. Multi-time track champ James Castleberry was now the new leader. A few more cautions slowed the event. On lap 15 the race was halted when Gardner hit the wall in turn one. Rod Oliver and Chris Warner tangled near the bottom of the track in turn one. Under the yellow Warner tried to restart but didn’t have any brakes and accidently contacted Danielle Clauson who spun around. The ensuing restart saw Davis peek his nose to the inside of Castleberry for the lead. The two raced side-by-side in dramatic fashion. Davis was able to hug the bottom going into turn one and take the lead. Davis led the final few laps with eased to pick up the exciting win. Jay Norton should be commended with his drive. Norton passed Castleberry coming out of the final turn of the race to clinch the second spot. Leroy Perry finished in the fourth spot. Steve Studebaker rounded out the top five. Tonight, was by far, the best Super Stock race of the season.
