Steel Powell Gets First Career Win

Marysville, CA (May 11, 2019) …. Making only his fifth career start in a winged 360 sprint car, 17-year-old Steel Powell won the 25-lap feature event Saturday night at Marysville Raceway. Powell, another one of these talented Cycleland kids, led every lap in route to the popular win. The race itself was slowed by seven cautions and two red flags. Even with the hiccups in the race, Powell stayed cool, calm and collected in winning his first race. Peter Paulson made his 2019 debut a success by finishing second. Billy Wallace scored a third-place finish. Korey Lovell had an up and down night. Lovell was involved in once of those early yellow flags and came back to finish fifth. Same goes with Colby Wiesz. Wiesz crashed on lap 14 and worked his way back to a fourth-place finish. Championship point leader Michael Ing clipped a spinning car and flipped. Ing’s winning streak, three, came to an end. Wiesz turned the fastest lap in qualifying. His lap time was 12.532. Wiesz, Ing and Roberto Kirby each one eight lap heat races. A total of 19 cars competed tonight.
Thirteenth place starting Brian Compton grabbed the lead on lap six and went on to lead the final 14 laps to win the Hobby Stock main event. Eighteenth place starting Shannon Collins finished third and earned an extra $100 from Shelby’s Pest Control for passing the most cars from his original starting spot. Devin Ryan was solid all night and finished second at the finish. Jesse Van Roekel started tenth and did a great job to come home fourth. Rick Lloyd had a crazy night. Lloyd started fourth, fell back to 16th and then charged back to a fifth-place finish. As with the sprint car race, this main event was marred with ten yellow flags. Collins won the 12-lap B main event. James West won the first heat. Kyle Cheney grabbed the win in heat two. Compton won the third heat race. Jesse Van Roekel won heat four. An amazing turnout of 26 cars packed the pits. The Hobby Stock division has been the leader when it comes to car counts in 2019.
Ryan Winter passed Mike Reeder on lap four and never looked back. Winter won the 20-lap feature by .405 seconds over Ben Wiesz. Winter continues to impress with his veteran like leadership in this division. Reeder held on to finish third. Jeremy Blackshere started 11th and finished fourth. Wade Ehrlich rounded out the top five. Robert Johnson started 15th and raced up to a sixth-place finish. Winter won the first eight lap heat race. Wiesz won the second heat. Both drivers were the class of the field tonight. Winter wins and Wiesz ran second in the main event. Ehrlich won the final heat race. Once again, a solid car count with 19 cars competed.
