Hopkins, Grenert and Cooper all Winners at Marysville
Marysville, CA – (3-19-22) …Shane Hopkins won the exciting 25-lap winged 360 sprint car main event at Saturday night’s championship point race number two. Hopkins led for most of the race, but did receive a break, when late race leader Andy Forsberg pulled to a stop on lap 22 with an expired engine. This gave the lead back to Hopkins, and he held off a hard charging Chase Majdic for the win. Hopkins started on the pole position and led 22 other drivers to the green flag start. Justin Henry followed in the second spot while Joel Myers Jr. held down the third-place spot. The race was halted a few times, but the most serious occurred on lap 22 when Wyatt Brown, Kevin Lovell, and Mike Monahan all tangled in turn four. The lap prior is when Forsberg stopped to bring out the yellow.
Track conditions were moist all night due to a rain shower that popped up around the time the track wanted to hot lap. With the extra moisture in the track, hot laps were extended to try and run the track in. While the officials and drivers on hand did the best they could, the track never slowed down and offered a fast and furious pace all night. In the end, Hopkins was just too good for anyone to get by. Majdic finished second. Henry held the third spot. Myers Jr. came home fourth. Tanner Carrick rounded out the top five.
Fast time honors went to Majdic who was the second to last car to qualify. His lap time was 12.629. Nice job by the crews of both Korey Lovell and Bobby Butler. Both drivers flipped when they collided in their heat race. Both teams made repairs quickly to allow them to start the main. Butler ran up to a ninth-place finish. Lovell finished 11th.
The IMCA Sport Mod feature was a good race. Jimmy Ford led the early part of the 20-lap main event. Unfortunately, contact between himself and another car would cause Ford to stop on the infield briefly. As he resumed after the yellow had come out, one could tell his car was damaged. Ford continued but finished sixth. Brian Cooper then emerged as the driver to beat. Cooper came from his fourth starting spot to the lead. Near the end of the race Lisa Shelby applied pressure on Cooper for the lead. Cooper never faltered and won the race by almost a full second. Shelby finished a solid second. Richard Vander Ploeg finished third. Damian Merritt and Scott Savell rounded out the top five.
The Dwarf Car main event featured 14 cars going 20-laps. A lengthy red was needed on lap four when Shawn Whitney took a nasty tumble while racing into turn one. The driver was shaken and ultimately complained a neck and shoulder area pain. It was a scary situation but happy to report he is currently at home resting. We send out best thoughts to Whitney. Once the race resumed it was the Corey Eaton show. Eaton held strong up front holding off a hard charging Mike Reeder and Mike Grenert. With just two laps to go, Grenert made his move around Eaton for the lead and ultimately the win. Eaton slipped back to fourth during this time. Reeder powered his way into a second-place finish. Josh Wiesz did a nice job all night to finish in third. Ben Wiesz finished fifth.
