Youth Rises to the Top in Sprint Car Racing
(Marysville, CA 4/17/23)…Two young and upcoming drivers sit atop the 2023 championship standings coming into this Saturday nights point race number five. Corning’s Brian McGahan Jr., 23-years-old, is fresh off his first career 360 sprint car win last Saturday night. McGahan Jr. holds a 15-point edge over 19-year-old driver Dawson Hammes of Marysville. Both drivers display speed, the capability to race hard, and the ability to win. Those three attributes are all common in our sport’s best drivers. The Northern California racing community has been put on notice, these two drivers are poised and ready to make their marks in sprint car racing.
Plumas Lake’s Koa Crane and Marysville’s Carson Hammes, the younger brother of Dawson, also show promise. Crane, 15-years-old, is currently fifth in points, while Carson, who is also 15, sits in sixth. Both teenagers have a chance to win this year. Four of the top six points are under the age of 23. The future of sprint car racing is always about developing the new, youthful crop of drivers. Marysville Raceway does a great job of offering a collection of talented veteran racers and a mix of young and upcoming sprint car drivers.
This Saturday night the bright lights will be shining down on Marysville Raceway as three divisions are scheduled to entertain the dirt track fans. Winged 360 sprint cars, Hobby Stocks, and Crate Sprints are set to converge at point race number five.
This Saturday marks the fourth appearance of the season for Hobby Stocks. Howard Law is back at the top of the point standings. Zach Lindgren has two wins this year and sits two points back of Law. Look for Kyle Cheney, Joe Gillock, or Gary Holsey to wind up in victory lane soon. Those three drivers have all been close but unable to lead the last lap.
Matthew Kaiser sits at the top of the Crate Sprint division. He dominated the most recent main event and now holds a nine point edge over fan favorite Misty Castleberry. Right behind Castleberry is a gaggle of drivers led by Mike Ballentine, Jacob Johnson, and Kelly Hicks. The talent in this division continues to increase.

Pit gate opens at 3:00 pm. Front gate 5 pm. Cars on track 5 pm. Prices for all regular season events will be $17.00 for adults, $15.00 for seniors/juniors and military with proper identification. $8 for kids ages 6-11. Children 5 and under are FREE. Parking is FREE. Full-service concessions, beer garden, and novelty booth will be open.

Marysville Raceway is located just off of Simpson Lane next to the Marysville Flea Market in the Yuba River flood plain. The ¼ mile clay oval has operated for more than 60 years at this location. Over time it has had numerous configurations and operators. Improvements over the last decade have made the facility rival any California oval track operation and draws a large contingent of racers and fans.
