Law Grabs Win 5, Wallace and Whitney in Victory Lane

Three divisions Put on Great Show Saturday Night
(Marysville, CA 7/8/23)…A total of 57 race cars amongst three divisions invaded Marysville Raceway for Saturday night point show No. 13. The Dwarf Cars led the way with 23 cars while the 360 sprints and Hobby Stocks each had 17 individually. The night started off with Brian McGahan Jr. earning an extra $100 for fast time. His quick lap was 12.867.
The 25-lap sprint car main event went yellow before the second lap was complete. Point leader Brian McGahan Jr. slowed with a suspension issue and limped to the pit area. The crew did an amazing job to get him back out onto the track as the race restarted. Billy Wallace led the first part of the race. Soon, Dawson Hammes was all over him. On lap 11, Hammes passed Wallace for the lead, but before the next lap was completed, a yellow was waived. This neglected the pass and put Wallace back up front. Up to this point, Colby Wiesz was having a great battle with Drake Standley for third. Carson Hall ran in the fifth spot. Hammes found the right line around the track on lap 14 and passed Wallace for the lead. On lap 17, Bobby Butler made a nice move around Hall for the fourth spot at the time. On lap 18, McGahan Jr. had charged back into fifth place. Up front Hammes struggled to get around two slower cars. This allowed Wallace to close back in on lap 21 and ultimately take the lead back. Two laps later, Hammes passed Wallace back for the lead. On the 24th lap, Hammes led the race going into turn three. At that point he had a right rear tire going down. As he set the car into the third turn, it got loose, and he tried to correct it coming out of turn four. Unfortunately, he was unable to save his car from spinning out and scooted down the track, collecting McGahan Jr. who had raced back into third. The lucky dog was Wallace who hugged the bottom and crossed the checkered flag first. It was Billy’s first win in over two years. Standley had an overall great night and finished second. Butler ended up third. A great rebound for the defending track champion. Hall brought his car home fourth. Nick Larson battled back after a bad qualifying effort to finish fifth. Dennis Scherer charged from the last row to finish sixth. Wiesz won the first eight-lap heat. Standley was solid in heat two and got the win.
The drive for five is what Howard Law did tonight. Law came into the night as the Hobby Stock point leader. After 20 laps of racing, Law left Marysville with his fifth win of the year. Law took the lead away from Jacob Bright on lap seven and led the final 14 laps with constant pressure from Kyle Cheney. Kyle moved into the second spot on lap 10. Law had to endure numerous restarts late in the race. Cheney was all over Law and should be commended for his great determination. Joe Gillock was one of the front runners once again tonight. Gillock raced his way into the third-place finish. Bright held strong all night and finished fourth. Zach Lindgren had a fast car as usual and finished fifth. Kevin Thomas continues to impress as a top Hobby Stock driver and finished sixth. Gillock and Lindgren were the two heat race winners. The Hobby Stocks continue to shine under the bright lights of Marysville Raceway.
It only took Shawn Whitney four laps to go from his eighth starting spot to the lead. After he dominated the earlier eight-lap heat race, Whitney zoomed to the front and never looked back. Mike Grenert was a top contender but spun around on lap five. Grenert had led the second and third lap. On lap 12 Dylan Shrum spun around while also in the second spot. Dan Geil, who led the first lap, did a good job holding onto the second spot. Mike Reeder was solid all night and charged from seventh to finish third. After the spin, Grenert fell back to 15th, then raced his way to a fourth-place finish. Cody Shrum started 15th and charged towards the front all night during the 20-lap main event. Cody did a great job and finished fifth. Dylan also rebounded after his spin and came back to finish sixth. Reeder won the second heat. Dylan Shrum won the third heat.
